"Pour le meilleur et pour le prix !"
Biskra, queen of the Ziban
Biskra, about 400 km south-east of Algiers, is the gateway to the Sahara and the capital of the Ziban, the oasis of the Deglet Nour date. Winters are mild and sunny, making it a popular destination from October to April.
Around the town: the mosque of Sidi Okba, which holds the tomb of Uqba ibn Nafi, the El Kantara gorges, known as 'the mouth of the desert', and the Hammam Salihine spa.
Where to stay in Biskra
The town centre is handy for shops, the date markets and business trips; hotels outside town, towards the palm groves and Hammam Salihine, are quieter.
Summer is very hot: the best season runs from autumn to spring, and the date harvest in autumn is a lovely time to visit.
Getting to Biskra
Mohamed Khider airport has flights from Algiers; by road, Biskra is reached from Batna through the El Kantara gorges.
