Algeria's thermal spas: Hammam Melouane, Hammam Bouhadjar, Hammam Righa, Guergour and Bouhanifia

Algeria has many hot springs, and some have become real spa towns known throughout the country. The Romans already used them; today families come for a hot bath, a course of treatment or simply a change of scene. Here are the five spas most searched for on Google in Algeria, where they are and where to stay nearby.

Hammam Melouane (Blida province)

The most searched-for spa, and the closest to Algiers on this list. Hammam Melouane is a mountain town in Blida province, set in a valley: the water comes out of the spring at more than 40 °C. People come for the baths and the scenery.

Good to know: on summer weekends it gets very busy and the mountain road fills up quickly. Leave early in the morning, or come on a weekday.

Where to stay: we do not offer a hotel in Hammam Melouane itself. The easiest option is to stay in Blida or Algiers and go for the day. Hotels in Blida · Hotels in Algiers

Hammam Righa (Aïn Defla province)

Hammam Righa is one of the country's oldest spas: in Roman times the town was called Aquae Calidae, "the hot waters". It lies in Aïn Defla province, near Boumedfaâ, west of Algiers.

Where to stay: as for Hammam Melouane, Blida and Algiers are the most practical bases. Hotels in Algiers

Hammam Bouhadjar (Aïn Témouchent province)

The great spa of the west. Hammam Bouhadjar has several natural hot springs, some reaching 72 °C. People come for the baths and the treatments of the spa.

Where to stay: Aïn Témouchent and Oran are within easy reach by road. Hotels in Aïn Témouchent · Hotels in Oran

Hammam Guergour (Sétif province)

In Sétif province, Hammam Guergour is known for water at over 40 °C, ranked among the most radioactive in the world, and for the remains of Roman baths.

Where to stay: Sétif, the region's main city, has the widest choice. Hotels in Sétif

Hammam Bouhanifia (Mascara province)

Bouhanifia is a historic spa in western Algeria: its spa architecture dates back to the early 20th century.

Where to stay: Oran is the region's main city, where we have the most hotels. Hotels in Oran

Our tips before you go

  1. Ask your doctor before a course of treatment: very hot, mineral-rich water does not suit everyone (heart, blood pressure, pregnancy).
  2. Avoid summer weekends if you want space: it is the busiest time at the spas near the big cities.
  3. Bring sandals, a towel and a bottle of water: you dehydrate quickly in a hot bath.
  4. Book your hotel in town rather than on site: you will have more choice and can go there and back in a day.
