Bou Saâda, the 'city of happiness'
Bou Saâda, about 250 km south of Algiers, is the oasis closest to the capital: palm grove, old ksar, river valley and the first dunes. Its nickname, 'city of happiness', comes from its mild autumn and spring climate.
The town inspired the painter Étienne Nasreddine Dinet, who lived and is buried here; the museum named after him shows his work. The Ferrero mill and its waterfall are a classic walk.
