Constantine, the city of bridges
Constantine, in eastern Algeria, is built on a rock plateau cut by the deep gorge of the Rhumel river. A series of bridges link its districts: the Sidi M'Cid suspension bridge, opened in 1912, hangs high above the gorge, and the Salah Bey Viaduct, opened in 2014, carries traffic across the valley.
The old city keeps the Palace of Ahmed Bey, one of the finest Ottoman-era palaces in Algeria, and the souks around it. The Emir Abdelkader Mosque, with its tall minarets, and the Monument aux Morts on the heights, with its view over the gorge, are the other classic sights. The Roman site of Tiddis is a short drive north-west, and Timgad, a UNESCO site, is a day trip to the south.
Where to stay in Constantine
The city centre is the best choice to explore on foot: bridges, palace, souks and restaurants are close together. International chain hotels such as the Marriott, the Novotel and the ibis are popular with business travellers and families alike.
For a car trip or an early flight, hotels on the main roads and towards the airport save time, as the centre is busy at rush hour. Constantine has a modern tramway that links the centre with the newer districts.
Getting to Constantine
Mohamed Boudiaf International Airport, south of the city, has flights to Algiers, the south of the country and abroad. Constantine is on the East-West motorway, about four to five hours by road from Algiers depending on traffic, and trains also run from Algiers and Annaba.
