Saint-George or El Djazaïr: the same hotel
Many people still search for the Hotel Saint-George in Algiers: it is the same property. Extended in the early 1980s with new wings designed by the architect Fernand Pouillon, it reopened in 1982 as Hotel El Djazaïr, part of the state-owned El Djazaïr chain.
A palace steeped in history
The Saint-George opened in 1889 and quickly became one of the most famous hotels in Algiers. From November 1942 to December 1943 it housed the Allied headquarters of General Eisenhower, whose room has been preserved. Writers, artists and heads of state have stayed here over the decades, from Winston Churchill and Édith Piaf to Rudyard Kipling and André Gide.
Location: El Mouradia, on the heights of Algiers
The hotel is at 24 Avenue Souidani-Boudjemaa, El Mouradia, a quiet district on the heights of Algiers, with views over the city and the bay from its gardens. The city centre, the Casbah and the seafront are a few minutes by taxi depending on traffic; allow half an hour or more to Houari Boumediene airport at rush hour.
Gardens, pool and spa
The gardens, planted with many Mediterranean trees, are one of the hotel's charms, with an outdoor pool and a terrace. The hotel has a spa with hammam, restaurants and a café. Breakfast may be included depending on the rate.
