Is Algeria safe to visit? What the UK and US travel advice says in 2026
Published on 7 November 2026 · Nreservi teamIt is the first question many travellers ask before booking a trip to Algeria, whether they are coming for business, to visit family or to discover the country. Here is what the official travel advice says, without exaggerating or playing anything down.
What the official travel advice says
United Kingdom (FCDO, updated 25 September 2026): the Foreign Office advises against all travel to within 30 km of Algeria's borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and, in Illizi and Ouargla provinces and the Chaambi mountains area, Tunisia. It advises against all but essential travel to within 30 km of the rest of the Tunisian border. It says the terrorist threat is higher near the borders, in rural and mountainous areas of the north and in the Sahara, and warns of pickpocketing and petty theft in the larger cities.
United States (State Department, reissued September 2024): Level 2 of 4, "Exercise increased caution". It advises against rural areas within 50 km of the Tunisian border and within 250 km of the borders with Libya, Niger, Mali and Mauritania, and against overland travel in the Sahara.
What this means in practice
The areas to avoid are the border regions and overland travel across the deep south. The cities where most visitors stay, Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba, Béjaïa and Tlemcen, are not in those areas. For the Casbah of Algiers, the FCDO recommends using a good local guide and letting your hotel know your plans.
Practical tips
- Check your own government's advice just before you travel: it can change, and travel insurance may not cover you in an area your government advises against.
- For the Sahara, travel with a local agency and guide, and fly to Djanet or Tamanrasset rather than going by road.
- In the cities, keep the usual habits: bag closed, phone away in crowds, taxi or ride-hailing at night.
- Book an established hotel and share its address with family or colleagues.
