The Algerian Sahara, a winter destination
More than four-fifths of Algeria is desert, and its south holds some of the most striking landscapes in the Sahara: red and golden dunes, black volcanic peaks, palm-grove oases, mud-brick ksour (fortified villages) and thousands of prehistoric rock paintings.
The season runs from October to April, when days are warm and sunny and nights are cool. From May to September daytime heat is extreme, and most desert trips stop. December and January can bring near-freezing nights in the deep south, so pack warm layers.

Where to go: Djanet, Tamanrasset, Timimoun, Taghit
Djanet is the gateway to the Tassili n'Ajjer, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its sandstone 'forests' of rock and its rock art showing giraffes, cattle herds and daily life from thousands of years ago, and to the red dunes of the Tadrart Rouge.
Tamanrasset is the base for the Hoggar (Ahaggar) mountains and the Assekrem plateau, famous for its sunrises over a sea of volcanic peaks.
Timimoun, the 'red oasis' of the Gourara, has ochre ksour, vast palm groves watered by ancient underground channels (foggaras) and salt lakes at the edge of the Grand Erg Occidental. It is one of the gentlest introductions to the Sahara.
Taghit sits at the foot of the huge dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental, beside an old ksar, about an hour and a half by road from Béchar airport. Ghardaïa and the M'zab valley, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, are a good stop on the way south.
Visa: the Sahara visa on arrival
Most foreign visitors need a visa for Algeria. For tourism in the south, Algeria grants a visa on arrival to travellers on a trip organised by a travel agency licensed by the Algerian Ministry of Tourism, when the programme includes southern provinces such as Djanet, Illizi, Tamanrasset, Timimoun, Adrar, Béchar, Béni Abbès or In Salah.
The agency registers your details on the ministry's online platform and sends you a boarding authorisation with a QR code; the visa, valid for up to 30 days, is issued on arrival and its fee is paid there. You need a passport valid for at least six months. Independent trips and visits to northern Algeria only still need a visa from an Algerian consulate.
Rules can change from one season to the next: check the current conditions with an Algerian embassy or consulate before you book flights.
Safety, guides and getting there
Read your government's travel advice before you go. As of 2 November 2026, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel within 30 km of Algeria's borders with Libya, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, and against travel near parts of the Tunisian border; US citizens should check travel.state.gov. Desert excursions (4x4, bivouac, trekking) are done with a licensed local agency and guide.
Most international visitors fly into Algiers, then take a domestic flight south to Djanet, Tamanrasset, Timimoun or Béchar (for Taghit). Flights and hotels fill up early for Christmas and New Year: book as soon as your dates are set.
On Nreservi you see live hotel prices and book online. Pay by card online, or in Algerian dinars (BaridiMob, bank transfer or cash at our agency in Algiers), and receive your voucher by email or WhatsApp once confirmed. Our team can help you plan the hotel part of your Sahara trip.
