Taghit, the finest dunes of the Grand Erg Occidental

Taghit is one of Algeria's favourite Saharan destinations: a mud-brick ksar overlooking a palm grove, with a wall of golden dunes rising right behind the village. It is especially popular for New Year's Eve.

The town is about an hour and a half by road from Béchar airport. The search above shows hotels in Taghit and Béchar with live prices and availability.

What to do in Taghit

Climb the dunes at sunset, walk through the old ksar and its palm grove, and see the rock engravings in the surrounding valleys.

Go out by 4x4 or on a camel ride and spend a night in a bivouac with a local agency.

Combine your stay with Béni Abbès, the 'pearl of the Saoura', a few hours' drive away, or continue south to Timimoun and the red oasis of the Gourara.

New Year's Eve in Taghit: book early

Taghit has only a handful of hotels and they are in high demand at the end of the year: book from November.

From October to April the days are mild; bring warm clothes for the evenings, which are cold in the desert, especially in December and January.

Getting there

By plane to Béchar, then about 1 h 30 by road; or by road from Oran and the west of the country. A car or a transfer arranged in advance is the easiest way to reach the village.

Foreign visitors: Algeria offers a visa on arrival for tourists visiting the Saharan regions with an approved local agency; check the current conditions with the Algerian consulate before booking.
