The Sahara, the great New Year tradition
For years the Great South has been the top New Year destination in Algeria. During the 2024 end-of-year holidays Taghit welcomed thousands of visitors, and Djanet, Ghardaïa and Illizi were full too. December is the heart of the Sahara season: mild days and clear skies… and cool, even cold, nights in the desert. Bring warm clothes for the evenings.
Taghit (Béchar province) — the most popular oasis for New Year: an old ksar, a palm grove and the great dunes of the Great Western Erg at the foot of the village. Tunisia, without a visa, by car or by plane
For a New Year by the sea, Tunisia remains a safe bet: Algerians enter without a visa with their passport, by road or by air. Hammamet and Sousse have the large hotels. Many hotels hold a gala dinner on 31 December: it is sometimes compulsory and charged on top of the night, so check the offer before booking. In winter, hotels with an indoor pool and spa are the most popular.

Istanbul, New Year in the city
Istanbul attracts more and more Algerian families for New Year: lively districts, bazaars and Bosphorus cruises. In December it is cold and often damp. As for the visa, the rules depend on age since June 2026: under-15s and over-50s no longer need one.

- Book early, especially for the Sahara: oases have few rooms, and the nights from 30 December to 2 January go first.
- Read the conditions: gala dinner included or not, minimum nights, cancellation terms. Everything is shown on each offer before booking.
- Compare a stay à la carte with an organised trip: for Djanet or Taghit, an organised trip (transport, accommodation, excursions) avoids bad surprises.
- Think about the return: flights and roads are busy around 2 January; if you can, come back a day later.
