Where to stay in Tabarka

Tabarka, on Tunisia's north-west coast close to the Algerian border, feels very different from the big Sahel resorts: green hills, a small harbour, a Genoese fort on a rocky island and a coastline known for its coral and diving.

The tourist zone facing the sea has beach hotels, some with pools and a golf course nearby; the town centre and port have smaller hotels within walking distance of restaurants. Along the shore, the rock formations known as Les Aiguilles (the Needles) are a local landmark.

About 25 km inland, Ain Draham sits at around 800 m in the forested Kroumirie mountains, with hotels for walkers, fresh summer air and cool, sometimes snowy winters.

Which hotel suits you?

Divers and snorkellers: Tabarka's coral coast is one of Tunisia's best-known diving areas, with dive centres in town.

Golfers and families: beach hotels in the tourist zone, close to the sand and the golf course.

Nature lovers: mountain hotels in Ain Draham, surrounded by cork-oak forest, for hiking and a cooler stay in July and August.

Tabarka is smaller and quieter than Hammamet or Sousse, with fewer hotels, so book early for the summer.

When to go and how to get to Tabarka

June to September is the season for the beach and diving; spring and autumn are green and mild, good for walking in the hills.

By air: Tabarka–Ain Draham airport has only limited, mostly seasonal flights, so most visitors fly into Tunis–Carthage, about three hours' drive away.

By road from Algeria: the Oum Teboul border post in El Tarf province is about 15 km away, which makes Tabarka the easiest Tunisian resort to reach by car from Annaba or El Tarf. In summer, set off early because border queues can be long.
