Where to stay in Tunis: centre, Lac and the northern suburbs

Tunis is Tunisia's main gateway: Tunis–Carthage airport lies just a few kilometres from the city centre, and the beach resorts of Hammamet and Nabeul are about an hour away by road.

The city centre, around Avenue Habib Bourguiba, has hotels in every category within walking distance of the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its souks and the Zitouna Mosque. Les Berges du Lac (Lac 1 and Lac 2) is a modern district on the Lake of Tunis, close to the airport, with business hotels, restaurants and shopping centres.

To the north-east, the coastal suburbs mix history and sea: the ruins of Carthage (also UNESCO-listed), the blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa's seafront and the beach hotels of Gammarth, 15 to 20 km from the centre.

Which Tunis hotel is right for you?

Short stays and business: Les Berges du Lac, minutes from the airport.

Sightseeing on a budget: city-centre hotels near the medina and the light-rail network.

City and beach: Gammarth and La Marsa, where many hotels have pools, spas and thalasso, with Sidi Bou Said close by.

Character stays: guesthouses and boutique hotels in traditional houses in Sidi Bou Said and the medina.

When to go and how to get around

Spring and autumn are best for sightseeing; summer is hot but suits a seaside stay in Gammarth or La Marsa; winters are mild but can be rainy.

Tunis–Carthage has year-round flights from Europe and beyond, including from Algiers (about an hour and a half); from North America you will usually connect in Europe. Ferries from France and Italy dock at La Goulette.

The TGM suburban railway links the city centre (Tunis Marine station) with La Goulette, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa.
