Where to stay in Djerba
Djerba, an island in the Gulf of Gabès in southern Tunisia, is known for long white-sand beaches, palm groves and whitewashed villages; its traditional settlement pattern was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2023.
The east-coast tourist zone, from Sidi Mahrez through Midoun to Aghir, concentrates the big all-inclusive resorts and clubs, many with aquaparks. Houmt Souk, the island's main town, has simpler hotels close to the souks, the fort and the harbour.
Across the water on the mainland, Zarzis has quieter beach hotels and is linked to the island by the El Kantara causeway.
Which Djerba hotel suits you?
Families: east-coast resorts offer pools, water slides and children's activities, most of them right on the beach.
Couples: smaller resorts, some adults-only hotels, or traditional guesthouses set in Djerbian houses (houch) inland for a quieter stay.
Wellness: Djerba has many thalasso centres, a good option in the cooler months.
Culture: Houmt Souk's market streets, the pottery village of Guellala and the street-art village of Erriadh (Djerbahood) are all within easy reach of the hotels.
When to go and how to get to Djerba
The beach season runs from April to October, and Djerba stays mild later into the autumn than northern Tunisia, which makes it a popular choice for autumn breaks.
By air: Djerba–Zarzis international airport, near Houmt Souk, has year-round flights from Tunis and holiday flights from Europe, mostly in season; seasonal flights from Algeria run in some years.
By road: the island is connected to the mainland by the El Kantara causeway and by the ferry between Jorf and Ajim. From Algeria it is a long drive across southern Tunisia.
