Where to stay in Monastir: Skanes, marina and old town
Monastir is one of the calmest resorts on Tunisia's Sahel coast, with clear water, light sandy beaches and a compact old town. Its ribat, a seafront fortress begun in the 8th century, is the town's landmark; Monty Python fans may recognise it from Life of Brian.
Skanes, the hotel zone between the town and the airport, lines up large beachfront resorts, many of them all-inclusive with pools and water slides. The town centre and marina suit travellers who want restaurants, the medina and the Bourguiba Mausoleum nearby.
Sousse is about 20 km north and Mahdia about 45 km south; the Sahel Metro light railway links all three.
Which Monastir hotel is right for you?
Families with young children: Skanes resorts combine calm beaches, shallow in places, with children's pools, entertainment and all-inclusive dining.
Couples and relaxed stays: smaller hotels near the marina and old town, or resorts with thalasso and spa centres. Golfers have courses close to the hotel zone.
Short breaks: with the airport so close to the hotels, Monastir suits a long weekend.
Each offer lists the board basis and facilities before you book.
When to go and how to get to Monastir
The sea is warmest from July to September, and June and late September are less crowded. April, May and October bring mild weather for sightseeing and are often better value.
By air: Monastir Habib Bourguiba airport sits next to the Skanes hotel zone and mostly handles seasonal flights from Europe. All year round you can also fly into Tunis–Carthage, about two and a half hours away by road, including on direct flights from Algiers.
By road from Algeria: follow the Tunis motorway, then the Sahel motorway towards Sousse and Monastir.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Monastir airport from the hotels?
Very close: the airport is next to the Skanes hotel zone, and the town centre is only a few kilometres away. The Sahel Metro also has a station at the airport.
Is Monastir good for families?
Yes. Skanes has calm, sandy beaches, shallow in places, and large all-inclusive resorts with pools and entertainment.
Monastir or Sousse?
Monastir is quieter and closer to the airport; Sousse and Port El Kantaoui are livelier, with more nightlife and shopping. They are about 20 km apart, so it is easy to see both.
What is there to see in Monastir?
The ribat and its sea views, the old town and medina, the marina and the Bourguiba Mausoleum. The medina of Sousse and the El Jem amphitheatre make good day trips.
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Many nationalities (including UK, US, Algerian and most EU citizens) can visit Tunisia visa-free for short stays; check the current rules for your nationality with official sources before you travel.
